In this day and age, with the slow decline of record labels, musicians and music lovers are getting closer together. Though DIY communication is time consuming, I’m just happy that it’s possible for us to be in touch. Leana Song fans are such good people. Every show people tell us that the music was uplifting and grooving, but they also say how nice the vibe was. That’s why people continue to come out. The music and the vibe of the room. The band’s from Philadelphia, and the music’s a mixture of the Yoruban world in the Americas: hard to sort out what’s left over from all the slaveries around all these American parts and what’s new — but it’s beautiful. There are electric guitars and drums and acoustic basses and big coros and songs to the Orishas redone, and a sense of grace that comes out in the layering of voices and instruments. The band’s led by Shawn Hennessey, a guitarist and percussionist and he’s done a great job; there’s not much like this, and I want to keep listening to it. Also, it balances between form and freedom, and never falls over in its openness. Not predictable and most certainly special. Hope there’s a Volume 2 on the way.
Highly Recommended.
